Varun Murali

Varun is best known as the guitarist of the popular folk band Swarathma. He started out with the band 3 years ago and is now an intrinsic part of the band’s sound and direction.

Who would believe that it was only 5 years ago that Varun picked up the guitar for the 1st time. He fell in love with the instrument and pursued it with a dedication that surprised everyone around him. Not satisfied with just toying with this new passion, Varun decided to take music seriously and began taking guitar lessons from Bangalore’s best – Bruce Lee Mani.

More confident with professional training, Varun started to see music as a viable career option. He spent 2 years honing his skill and playing back up for a number of artists in Bangalore. He was then pursued by Swarathma to become a permanent part of the band and there’s been no looking back since!

Their first taste of success came with winning the Radio City Live 2008 talent hunt and they were immediately signed on by EMI Virgin India who released their debut album in January 2009. They then went on to represent India at Sutasi in Singapore. Later that year, the band was selected to work with acclaimed UK-based producer John Leckie (producer for George Harrison, Muse, Radiohead) on the British Council Soundpad project. Soundpad led to a tour of the UK and a spot at the Great Escape Festival in Brighton. 2 tracks from this prestigious project were put onto a compilation EP that was available in the UK and India.

Swarathma is the sound of new India. Their contemporary yet rooted sound has won them acclaim, accolades and a loyal fan base. Varun’s musical style is an essential part of the mix. His musical sensibilities give direction and focus to the bands folksy melodies.

Inspite of his busy schedule Varun thinks that it’s a matter of principle to keep bettering himself. He is currently under the guidance of legendary guitarist Konark Reddy who has worked with the likes of Scott Henderson during his time at Berklee. Varun is also intent on spreading his gift and teaches guitar privately and to groups of young enthusiasts.

Varun is an Epiphone endorsee and works closely with Gibson Guitar in India.
